Inexpensive Paranormal Investigation Tools for Novice Ghost Hunters

Nov 11, 2009 Rhonda Rowley Investigating the paranormal can be a fun and rewarding hobby, even without spending thousands of dollars on state-of-the-art equipment. With television shows like SyFy's Ghost Hunters and Discovery's Ghost Lab growing in popularity, more and more people want to take up paranormal investigation as a hobby. While the teams on these TV shows have access to an expensive array of toys and tools, it is possible to start ghost hunting with just a few basic items that can be acquired inexpensively. In fact, some ghost hunting tools may already be readily available within the home. Basic Ghost Hunting Equipment for Beginners Rather than going out and purchasing every available ghost hunting tool, beginners should begin with a few basic pieces of equipment and gradually add more tools to their arsenal. This is not only easier on the wallet, but also allows novice paranormal investigators to completely master each piece of ghost hunting equipment before moving on to additional, new items Read more at Suite101: Budget Ghost Hunting Equipment for Beginners: Inexpensive Paranormal Investigation Tools for Novice Ghost Hunters http://paranormal.suite101.com/article.cfm/budget_ghost_hunting_equipment_for_beginners#ixzz0cwLAXEAw The copyright of the article Budget Ghost Hunting Equipment for Beginners in Paranormal is owned by Rhonda Rowley. I was having a discussion with my son-in-law and the subject of the paranormal and paranormal investigations came up. Now my son-in-law doesn't believe in the paranormal and I think that to be a good paranormal investigator you either believe or don't believe. Let me explain my reasons behind this. If you have had a paranormal experience then you usually are a believer and want to investigate what happened or the sources behind it. You will use all the tools at your disposal to try to prove the existence of the paranormal. As a good investigator you will not tamper with the evidence to prove the existence of the paranormal or supernatural. I tend to follow the path set forward by Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson, founders of The Atlantic Paranormal Society (T.A.P.S.), when they go on an investigation the first thing they try to do is debunk the claims. The evidence they cannot debunk is then used to prove the existence of the paranormal. Sometimes they cannot prove or disprove a haunting and will tell the client so when they talk to them. Jason even went so far as to admit that not all active locations can be considered haunted. If you are a non-believer than you either never believed or never had an experience. These folks will usually be more dillegent while reviewing evidence and try to disprove a haunting. I would want a non-believer on my team just for that reason. So what are you a believer or a non-believer. Leave a comment below and let me know. I really want to know.
When I first started doing investigations everything was about Orbs, they were in pictures, literally 1000's surfaced on the web all claiming to something of the paranormal nature. I too long ago fell into that mindset, but after doing some serious research, time taking literally 100 photos, both film and digital, diffrent lighting and etc. A few things I noticed was my digi cam picked up more than the 35mm, also noticed some inconsistencies. Personally I believe Orbs caught on still's are explainable, micro dust particles with a combonation of a flash and fast shutter speed is a recipe for what?.....ORBS. Now I can say that I have both seen and taken video of balls of light that I can rationalize but still cannot explain. As an investigator you must examine and weigh each an piece of evidence very carefully before calling it a ghost or something paranormal. I will leave you with a true story... about 8 years ago I created fake orbs using photoshop, really could tell the diffrence between my photos and ones on the web. I had submitted this photo to a few groups asking for an opinion, all said the same thing, my house was haunted and there was something very paranormal about my photo. Be wary on photos!
Interviewing witnesses is no easy task but, has to be done. To be a good paranormal interviewer there are a few traits you must have, patient, compassionate, caring and precise. These traits show the witness(s) that you are there for them during this time of crises. The initial Call Sure you will be extremely happy and nervous that you are getting a call to investigate but remember this has now become a “pre-screen” so make sure you ask questions before you agree to investigate the site. The core set of questions I usually use are as follows:
  1. What is the phenomenon they are experiencing? - This helps with determining the classification of the occurrence.
  2. Currentness – How often does the occurrence happen, when was the last occurrence?
  3. Are there additional witnesses other than your self? If so would they be willing to be interviewed?
The Interview The keys to interviewing witnesses is being a good listener, taking notes, both writing and recorded seems to be the most accurate way to document what they relay to you. During the interview do not at any point say “sounds like a classic haunting” or anything to that effect, at this point you are asking questions and being a good listener and on a fact finding mission, without evaluating the witness statements with your team and an actual investigation you do not know what the occurrences are if there is any. During this interview session you will need a set of questions,  I would recommend starting with the very basics:
  1. What are the occurrences?
  2. How often does the occurrence happen
  3. At what times does the occurrence happen?
  4. Where does this happen (location)
  5. Who lives in the home
  6. how long have you lived here
Also it is a great idea to have the home owner walk you through the areas in question, but, at no given time should equipment be used other than your voice recorder, a pencil and paper.
When you go on an investigation your group usually sets up a command center or command base. This is the spot where your monitors and all the cameras feed into. It can be a table in a room at the location or in a van outside of the investigation spot. My personal preference is to use a class C Recreational Vehicle or Motor Home. The RV can serve many functions during an investigation. Not only as a command center but also as a first aid station, rest area and as equipment and personnel transport. There are pros and cons to using the RV, and ultimately it is up to the team leader for that investigation.

Pros

  • If no power to the investigation location, RV has a generator that can power the equipment.
    • If you use the generator, make sure to take the noise into account when doing audio analysis, or better yet make a test from one of the hot spots and see how bad the generator noise is.
  • Can transport up to eight team members to the investigation site.
  • Can transport all of the equipment to the investigation site.
  • Has a built in rest room.
  • Has built in table to put the monitors.
  • If allowed by the client, the RV can plug into the power and water.
  • Has a refrigerator to keep lunches in and a microwave to heat up food.
  • Has beds to lay down in if team members overcome with nausea or for first aid reasons.
  • First Aid can be administered from the vehicle.

Cons

  • Usually uses a lot of gas.
  • If using the generator need to make sure have a full tank of gas.
  • Generator can be noisy.
My question to you is when your group goes on an investigation, how is your command center set up?
This question is always when discussing the paranormal, most think they all mean the same, truth of the matter is, they all have a diffrent meaning. Poltergeists We all know, or at least have heard that Poltergeist means "Noisy Ghost". A Poltergeist is not a ghost, a haunting or a demon as some believe but, is related to PK (PsychoKinesis) a situation caused by the subconscious mind of a living agent and their way of releiving sever stress. A friend of mine Loyd Auerbach has researched on this subject and goes on to explain that PK can involve anything from levitation of objects, sounds and smells. The mind is an incredible tool and in some cases its way of blowing off steam can be very destructive. Apparitions Apparitions appear generally the same form the person had when they were alive. They react to people and their surroundings, almost per say interactive. Hauntings A haunting is an imprint in our enviroment, think of it as a scratched record, it continues to play that same note over and over again. These imprints can be anything from footsteps to visuals. A good example is, you investigate a site where a man is seen falling down a flight of stairs, each witness has seen the same thing, not together, the only thing in common between the witnesses is that it was approximatly around the same time. This is a classic haunting, meaning the broken record or loop effect. We hope this clears things up, the paranormal goes far beyond Ghosts, in up coming articles we will explain even more in-depth terms and theories.
