Tools of the Trade, High-Tech Tools Demystified – EMF Meters

Long ago paranormal investigators replied solely on intuition, cameras, note pad and their education to help determine if a site had paranormal significants. Today, with the help of modern technology and the use of EMF devices(Electro Magnetic Fields ) are used to detect possible unexplained magnetic fields which some attribute to the presence of ghosts and spirits, and at times used to spirit communication.

How do they Work? The EMF device detects any changes to the atmosphere is association with  electrical currents or appliances, in most cases, EMF meters are used key in and  pinpoint any change in the surrounding electromagnetic field which can mean that an energy or Spirit may be present. What do they Cost? EMF meters range in price from $30.00 – Over $300.00, I have personally used both the lower end and upper end devices, now of course I highly recommend the Tri-field (which reads on a 3 axis vs a single axis that most EMF devices do) meter by Alpha Labs, for around $124.00, this device has a big brother called the Natural EMF meter which runs on a 9-volt battery or an AC adapter (both included). Model 2 has an input jack for an optional high-sensitivity magnetic coil. This model will run around $200.00. On the lower end devices, they are great for a back up, and if they break it is much easier to replace. I have used my $40.00 EMF device and can say it works! Again I do use both, but for someone just starting out the lesser end is works.

Tools of the Trade, High-Tech Tools Demystified – Non-Contact IR Thermometers

I'm sure after watching an episode of GhostHunters or related shows your wondering about that gun looking thing they use to check for ghosts, it is a valid question and hopfully we can get to the bottom of it for you. When I first started conducting investigations in the mid 90's we would walk an entire room with house

hold digital thermometer, taking our base line, literally walking every square foot of every room. If we had gotten an EMF spike we would have to walk over to the location and, well you know the drill. So why do you need to measure the temperature? Many people report and associate "COLD SPOTS" with paranormal activity (apporitions and Hauntings). By taking a base-line temperature you will be able to monitor activity, say your base line is 73 degrees, you get an emf spike and measure the temperature again and its 68 degrees, there may be something there. Today, a must have in the field is the Non-contact IR Thermometer. So what does all this mean? and why is it essential that I have one?. First off, Non-contact means you do not have to measure the temperature from a distance, IR, Infrared, which is used to measure temperature. When these hand held devices first hit the market they were sold for hundreds of dollars, now this technology is more commonly used they are available for under 30.00. So what are the advantages of using these? The advantages are huge, if you see something, say across a room or hall way, aim and measure. These items also reduce the time spent on getting your base-line room temperatures, leaving you more time to document.
